Controlling Oily Skin

Oily skin is caused by overproductive sebaceous glands, and can usually be recognized a shine, sometimes referred to as a greasy look on the skin, a thicker skin texture, with enlarged pores - mainly in the T-Zone, but at times all over the entire face. Congestion such as whiteheads, blackheads and acne breakouts are considered fairly normal with oily skin, but is not always the case.

Oily skin is sometimes thought to be a disadvantage due to the effects it can have on makeup, skin clarity and just the overall appearance of the skin. Help keep your skin mattified by applying a clay mask 2-3 times a week, such as Dermalogica Skin Refining Masque. Also try applying an oil control gel or lotion as your daily moisturizer that will control oil production throughout the day, like NeoStrata Oil Control Gel.

Common Skin Conditions & Solutions

Our skin is the largest organ on our body; it protects underlying muscles and organs, and therefore it is very important to keep in good health. The skin can experience numerous disorders and conditions, caused by known and unknown triggers. Listed are common skin conditions that effect people on an everyday basis.

Acne is a skin condition said to be partly hereditary, experienced by as much as 90% of teenagers. Because acne is such a common problem, it is frequently neglected, thought to dissipate on its own. True, acne will usually clear overtime, but if left untreated, acne usually gets worse, resulting in possible facial scarring. Acne can be treated by a simple at-home regimen. Products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid are regularly used for the treatment of acne and are normally quite successful. Cleansing congested skin morning and night, applying a spot treatment and wearing a sunscreen create a simple yet effective way to treat acne.

Very commonly, I am asked how to eliminate dark circles around the eye area. Dark circles can be hereditary or non-hereditary, possibly due to lack of sleep, thin skin, stress etc. I recommend using products containing vitamin K as an active ingredient. Try Revision Teamine Eye Complex night and day for the reduction dark circles.

Eczema is defined as an inflammatory, itching disease of the skin, most commonly found among young children and the elderly; however it can be experienced by people of all ages. Treating eczema can be difficult depending on the severity. Topicals such as cortocosteroids are generally prescribed to treat the area. I recommend Stiefel Laboratories Sarna Lotion and Prax Lotion for Itching Skin if there is itching associated with the eczema, which is normal.

Keratosis pilaris is caused when the hair follicles become filled with hard plugs. It is commonly found on the upper arms, yet is not limited to this area. Keratosis pilaris is treated with ingredients such as glycolic acid to exfoliate and vitamin E to hydrate. I recommend Glytone Keratosis Pilaris Kit.

Lastly, psoriasis is a condition characterized by inflamed, red and thickened areas with silvery scales, mostly found on the scalp, elbows, knees and lower back. Psoriasis on the scalp should be treated with ingredients such as salicylic acid or coal tar. I recommend DHS TAR GEL Shampoo or DHS SAL Shampoo Maximum Strength.

Even though these are just a few common conditions experienced by many, there is still frustration and embarrassment with issues like these. Treat the areas with the products recommend and look forward to healthy results.

Skin Care for Babies

Skin care products for babies have just recently become a big seller. Partially due to the increase in “celebrity” babies and celebrities launching baby care products, these kinds of brands have hit the market with very positive feedback.

Products formulated specifically for babies are highly beneficial due to their non-irritating, non-comedogenic, soothing, protective ingredients. Babies’ skin has specific needs as adults do and products like these new innovations are great at addressing such needs. Many babies and young children are born with or acquire conditions such as eczema and need products to help assist in alleviating the irritation from these issues.

Many known and trusted skin care lines carry products specifically for babies, including Blue Lizard Baby Suncream and Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion.

Baby brands such as California Baby carry an extensive line of products, including skin care, sun protection, bath time products, diaper care, hair and body and bug repellants that are safe and effective for use on a baby’s skin. The benefits of baby care products do not stop with just babies and toddlers; these products are also great on adult skin that is hypersensitive. Most of the baby care brands formulated include all natural ingredients that should be safe for any person’s skin.
